The Power of Play: An Enneagram Perspective

I have a little secret to tell: I struggle to have “fun” in the traditional sense. I have a “fun” personality, am socially outgoing and brave when it comes to engaging others. I love planning experiences (day trips and special events for others, etc.) However, when I attempt to connect over sports, games or spontaneous activities I haven’t done before, I freeze! This surprises a lot of people. It surprises me. For a six on the enneagram, fun can feel unsafe and unpredictable. We all land somewhere on the spectrum and can learn how to engage fun and play by expanding our social network.

I learned a lot about the importance of play this summer by observing how my nieces make believe. And, how my clients chose to take a break from coaching this July to embrace every opportunity. It was “game on” for most locals who hosts friends and family, took vacations and decided to play hooky from work.

The biggest “Ah-HA!” moment came in August when my client said, “I now know what I want to do in my retirement. Having free time in July and experimenting with my schedule gave me time to let life happen. I discovered how I want to spend my time.”

In other words, not having a plan or routine freed their mind up to dream, be in the moment and savor the simply joys of every day life. It gave her space to create!

Embracing fun and play can be a key factor in achieving success, both in your personal and professional life. In this blog, I will explore how different Enneagram types experience play. We'll also dive into the breakthroughs that can happen in life as a result of embracing fun and play.
